Dr. Ken Ravizza, a lead practitioner in athletic performance management and mental training, has made significant contributions to these fields, particularly in relation to goal setting and understanding why you play the game.

The Purpose of Goals

Ken  emphasized that goals in the context of performance management and mental training are not just about winning or achieving specific outcomes. Instead, he advocated for setting process-oriented goals. These are goals that focus on the actions, efforts, and strategies an individual can control. By setting process-oriented goals, individuals can maintain their motivation and confidence regardless of the outcome of a particular task or project.

Intrinsic Motivation

Ken emphasized the importance of understanding why you engage in a particular performance or mental training activity. He believed that individuals should tap into their intrinsic motivation, which is the internal drive and enjoyment they get from the activity, rather than relying solely on external motivators like rewards or recognition. When individuals connect with their deeper motivations, they are more likely to stay committed and passionate about their endeavors.

Mental Toughness

Dr. Ravizza often discussed the concept of mental toughness in the context of performance management and mental training. He believed that mental toughness is developed through a combination of goal setting, positive self-talk, and the ability to stay focused on the present moment. Individuals who can maintain their mental toughness are better equipped to handle pressure and adversity in various performance and training scenarios.

Focus and Visualization

Dr. Ravizza stressed the importance of mental imagery and visualization in performance management and mental training. He encouraged individuals to mentally rehearse their goals and visualize themselves succeeding in their endeavors. Visualization can enhance an individual's confidence and performance by creating a mental blueprint for success.

Embracing Challenges

Dr. Ravizza believed that challenges and setbacks are part of an individual's journey in performance management and mental training. He encouraged individuals to embrace these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. Resilience, in his view, is a key component of success in various performance and training contexts.

Dr. Ken Ravizza's work has had a profound impact on the fields of performance management and mental training, and his insights into goal setting and understanding the intrinsic motivations behind why you engage in various activities continue to be highly influential. His teachings often revolve around the idea that success in these areas is not just about external factors but also about mental preparation, motivation, and a deep understanding of one's personal motivations and goals.

Below is a PDF that I presented to a college soccer team early in pre-season to get the players ready for the season – and more. Topics covered include:

1. Bring vision and focus to your game

2. Understand why you play

3. Define the kind of player you are

4. Set meaningful goals for your career, season, and each day
